More than 80,000 students in the Chattanooga area have access to Gigabit-speed internet to explore and capitalize on new learning opportunities and experiences. EPB is also investing in their futures through several mentoring and training programs.
Mentoring students today to lead tomorrow
We’re serious about preparing the next generation for the careers of the future. We developed the EPB Institute of Technology and Networking at Tyner Academy to give high school students four years of preparation for careers in computer coding and information technology. This effort is also encouraging more young women to pursue STEM starting in the 9th grade. Through our Spark Mentor Program, we also mentor ninth graders from the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy to help them gain self-confidence and technical skills.
HCS EdConnect: Internet for all students in need
Recognized as a national model, HCS EdConnect powered by EPB is a partnership led by Hamilton County Schools that provides fiber fast internet to all economically challenged K-12 students in Hamilton County. More than 28,000 students and their family members benefit from the program which has been recognized by the American Public Power Association, the Chattanooga Tech Council, and dozens of national media outlets.
Helping generate brighter futures at Tyner Academy
The EPB Institute of Technology & Networking at Tyner Academy is a four-year program for 9th to 12th grade high school students. Participating students receive mentoring and training assistance to support them in pursuing careers in computer coding and information technology. A special IT-based curriculum helps students develop a strong understanding of computer technology and the programming which is the basis for many in-demand jobs and high-paying careers. As part of the effort to raise awareness about these high-value careers and provide students with a learning path that includes preparation for technical certifications and higher education, the EPB Institute is also encouraging more young women to pursue STEM careers. EPB engages in the program in partnership with the Hamilton County Schools’ Future Ready Institute.
SPARK Mentor Program
Complementing a college preparation curriculum focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), SPARK offers ninth-grade girls from Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy (CGLA) an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real world situations. This will better position them for successful careers in a competitive, knowledge-based global economy.
